A tarantula crossed our path while hiking in Palm Springs

A couple of days ago I was hiking on Frank Bogert Trail which starts at Andreas Hills, Palm Springs, when suddenly a tarantula crossed our path and I almost stepped on it! The size of this tarantula across its legs was about ten inches and it really was a bit scary.
Never before have I met a tarantula here and did not even know they live here. After some searching I found out that there are actually two species of tarantulas in the valley and the males start moving around typically in December, trying to find a mating partner. After mating a male will die.
